May Lindstrom’s 5 Tips for Summer Skin Recovery

Meet the skin chef behind one of my favorite luxury organic beauty brands: May Lindstrom. Her namesake line of products promote self-care from naturally derived ingredients, and ever since I tried her Problem Solver masque, I’ve been hooked. After a sun-drenched summer spent on the beach, my skin is yearning for extra hydration and indulgence. Luckily, May agreed to share her favorite skin recovery tips with us.

What inspired you to start your line of luxury organic skincare?

My adventures into skincare began as a small girl. Growing up, I would spend full days mashing wild plants into a pulp and covering myself, and everyone who would humor me, in “potions” made from these vibrant green liquids and clays I would dig from the iron rich soil in my yard. I have been a formulator of sorts from the very beginning, moving from child’s play, to my work cooking in professional kitchens, and back again to magical beauty potions.

This collection was born out of a desire to create a catalyst for loving self care. Having formulated for years with an unwavering focus on extreme skin conditions, I yearned to create something that was simply luxurious and lovely – that would not compromise on efficacy. My foundation in purity and simplicity is solid, but it was time for me to embrace playfulness in what I was sharing with clients.

I wanted to feel something when I picked up a bottle and entered my cleansing ritual. I wanted to feel peace, joy and celebration all in that one moment. And I wanted to share that with every woman I loved and cared about so she could feel this too.

What is your most valuable beauty tip?

Beauty is a reflection of your inner self – prioritize your own deliciousness, and be truly, fully, authentically You. When we are happy and intimately immersed in our world, our beauty cannot help but shine through.

What is your favorite travel destination?

There’s a little hideaway I love to go to in Yelapa, Mexico. You can only get there by boat and the little village has no cars or roads and only recently consistent electricity. We stay in an open-air palapa right over the water, waves crashing loudly all night long, hermit crabs and lizards making themselves cozy right in our living space. It’s wild and real and feeds my soul.

5 Tips for Summer Skin Recovery

1.
Hydration is absolutely key, both inside and out. This is the time to prioritize giving your skin a big drink – plenty of fresh water and good fats internally, and nutrient-dense oils externally. After a season in the sun, this is the single most important way to restore your natural balance and vibrancy.

Exfoliate. Skin cell turnover can become sluggish this time of year. Buildup from a summer of exposure to the elements as well as increased use of sun protection can leave your complexion dull and sleepy. Wake it up with enhanced attention to massage, gentle blood flow, and effective exfoliation with lightly stimulating herbs, clays and salts. 
The Clean Dirt is a game-changer, sloughing away dead skin so your barrier can function again, allowing your following hydration step to really work its magic. 

3.
Rest up. As we head into a busy fall and the long lineup of holidays to follow, it’s easy for our minds and bodies to go into overdrive. Pause. Breathe. Lay the foundation for this next chapter from a place of calm. Try to sneak in a nap when you catch yourself getting distracted or falling into the internet-scrolling wormhole. Go to bed just 30 minutes earlier and make your sleep count. Your skin does its primary regenerating in the night hours, so you’ll be rewarded by both looking and feeling your best.

Shine a spotlight on your skincare ritual. What’s working? What’s leaving you hungry for something different? Have you explored the ingredients list of your products lately? How do you feel about them? Skin is an ever-evolving organ and as the seasons shift, so does its needs. Tune in and really spend some time listening to your skin, touching it and paying attention to the messages it is giving you. Maybe you need a bit more moisture? Less friction? Time to toss that item you bought on a whim that’s not really resonating and maybe increase the one that you know your skin really loves that you tend to save for a special treat.

Commit to consistency. Show up for yourself. To me, skincare and self care go hand in hand. My cleansing ritual bookends my day, gives me somewhere soft to begin and end from that feeds me. Intentional touch, beautiful and nourishing ingredients, and a time-out that is just for me. Every day, no exceptions. I have two nights a week that no matter what, I do 
The Problem Solver. It keeps my skin clear like no other (seriously, the results are crazy) and it also forces a slow down that as a workaholic, mother-of-two, is difficult to find. It’s not always fancy – with a hot bath, candles and a glass of wine – just as often it’s dishes, cleaning up the house and catching up on overdue emails. Either way, it counts. You count. Make the time.
