Marysia Reeves’s Guide to the Bahamas as seen in Conde Nast

Story by: Louis Cheslaw

Bring a sunhat and little else on a trip to Harbour Island.

As a ballerina and surfer in her teens, Polish-born entrepreneur Marysia Dobrzanska Reeves found herself constantly switching between leotards and wetsuits. The uniforms of her youth make an appearance in her swim and beachwear line, Marysia Swim, where scallop-edged designs can be worn on sand and in surf (or at the office, as Reeves likes to do.) So where does a swimwear guru go for her own beach break? You’ll find her on Harbour Island in the Bahamas, the three-mile-long, 1.5-mile-wide isle in the Caribbean known for its colonial cottages and pink sand beaches.

Her husband had been looking for a getaway in the Bahamas—he grew up visiting the islands—so when their friend and Jewelry designer Jane Pope Cooper went and loved it, they followed her lead. And with the opening of the Marysia Boutique at the Dunmore Hotel in November, Reeves is now a part of the island herself. Here, she tells us what to do once you’re off the plane.

Where’s the best breakfast in town?
I love a little healthy juice and snack place called the Sweet Spot Café. They have coconut milk, too—I feel like I’m in California there.

What’s your favorite lunch spot?
Sip Sip! They have the most delicious salads, the kids love the big hot dogs, there’s lots of local flavors—and an ocean view to boot. You’ll always run into friends and it easily turns into one long boozy afternoon. The kids run to the beach, and you can linger all day with no worries and no hurries.

What walks would you recommend taking?
Walking along the ocean barefoot is my favorite. The island is only three miles long, so you can cover the whole length in one shot, no problem. Make sure you have a big sunhat to protect you from the strong sun, though.

Where should we stay?
The Dunmore. It’s such a special place—there’s a feeling you get that’s unmatchable. The staff is so lovely; they make you feel right at home.

What activities can you do there?
We love to take the boat out, go snorkeling, and spearfishing. The Dunmore arranges all the equipment you need and even charters a boat for you at the marina.

What do you dream about when you aren’t on Harbour Island?
Swimming for hours in the turquoise ocean with the family.
